Flash book review: My Prizes: An Accounting by Thomas Bernhard
My Prizes: An Accounting by Thomas Bernhard
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A minor work of Bernhard's but it still contains his usual pillorying of just about everyone and everything he encounters, and of course the individuals and bodies and institutions that deign him fit to receive these illustrious prizes he doesn't respect are not spared. Hilarious!
He takes solace in the moollah he pockets and the nice trips he gets to take with his old Aunty to the destinations of the different awards. The three award winning speeches printed at the end are pretty hilarious as is his resignation from the German Academy for Language and Poetry, which he never wanted to be a member of anyway and which which he calls 'the most dispensable in Germany and indeed the entire rest of the world...'
